"Wobbles the Mind" (wobblesthemind)

I’m sick of people (especially enthusiasts) pretending they don’t judge people by what they drive. I say if you call yourself a car person and talk to people that are car people then you need to expect 100% of those people to identify you by your car once they find out what it is. Doesn’t mean it has to be good or bad, stereotypical or individual. I just think that we can all agree that whatever you’re driving will impact the way people view and think of you, especially within a car community.

My problem with judging people by how they drive is that I have stereotypes that reality refuses to confirm. For instance, if someone drives a Lexus or Toyota, I assume that they’re a practical and responsible person, but the ones I see on the road are usually driven by reckless assholes.

I would judge that the Alfa guy above is cool based on his impeccable choice of car, but the matching outfit contradicts that.
Such judgements are why it helps to have a bunch of broadly different cars. Keep ‘em guessing.

People just hate to stereotype. It’s not “PC”. I say they exist for a reason.

Never mind that...nothing’s burning behind me...totally not a suit.

It all depends, I was cruising with an E63 on the highway for a while, and assumed him to be a total asshole, but he was actually an impeccable driver.

I 100% judge a dude by what he drives/ride.

I’m a car enthusiast and own wildly different cars, as do many enthusiasts. People like me don’t judge people by what they drive because we like cars, not brands.

It definitely does. Doesn’t mean it should though.
The one that car people seem to make the most often that I find the most ridiculous is that someone who drives a boring car must be a boring person. My next door neighbors have leased mid-level Hondas as long a I’ve known them. They were “Deadheads” back in the day, and now travel the whole world seeing famous rock musicians perform in other countries. They are amazing, friendly, and incredibly interesting people who are a lot of fun. They just aren’t interested in cars.

Stereotyping has nothing to do with being “PC”, especially in regards to vehicles. It’s simply just an ignorant and counterproductive way to view the world. For instance, I own both a slammed ‘66 GMC with a straight piped V8 and no paint and a soccer mom special late model BMW. Does my personality wildly change depending on what I’m driving? What about when I drive my Jeep or my old Japanese motorcycle?

Indeed, then there’s also the other way around. Our neighbors have a first-gen Xterra, a B5 A6, and a third-gen Supra, but they’re not gearheads. That’s just the fleet that happens to be what they need and want; the Xterra for the husband to strap bikes to and go off-roading in, the A6 for the wife with her business job, and the Supra for the uncle who just appreciates older machinery.

Obviously your personality doesn’t change. Stereotypes don’t mean every single person is exactly how you perceive them, but it might give you some insight.
Also, how is seeing a Subaru and assuming they vape a “counterproductive way to view the world”, if someone saw me in the BMW and thought I was a self important douche who doesn’t use his blinker (which I very well might be), who really gives a rat’s ass? Not I. Not I.
Stereotyping someone based on what they drive hurts nobody.

I 100% judge people based on what they drive. That doesn’t mean I’m always (or ever) right, though. If you look at my car history you’d probably think I was a meth addict.

What’s the basis of this rant. Were you recently scolded for suggesting someone in a new 328i was leasing it and rented an expensive small apartment outside of the city limits?

I drive a Hyundai, and people judge me for driving a Hyundai. Guy at work with a FoST makes a lot of fun of me.

My point is that it doesn’t give you insight because it’s a false way to judge someone. That’s how it’s counterproductive.

I think this is a good question and a fair rant. My brother-in-law owned a late-model convertible Mustang in the 90s and I drove it around San Diego a bit with the top down and chicks looked at me. I thought, “How fake is that? It’s not even my car.” I make a point of driving beater-looking vehicles that are well maintained. I do not want to be conspicuous in my consumption and, really, isn’t that what this is all about? Conspicuous consumption? I think you could get 500-700 horsepower in a car for less than what a new Hellcat costs and have a dependable daily driver.

That was the weirdest thing for me to get used to when I got into cars. I come from a background where everyone is trying to move up into the largest V8 sedan a manufacturer can make since a harsh riding, cramped compact 4-cyl hatchback with a manual transmission is the lowliest thing you can drive after high school. I love me a FoST but my family would raze me to no end if I pulled up in one. However, pull up in an R-Spec or 300C/SRT and they’d act as if I made partner!

I drive a 2014 Mustang V6. With a manual trans. And the performance pack. And an aftermarket driveshaft.
LET THE JUDGEMENT BEGIN.

My neighbors are terrible drivers (personally observed). I judge the growing damage on their SUV and vow to get out of the way if I see them on the road. I also judge whoever talked them into a used German vehicle that they couldn’t afford to maintain even if they didn’t run into things on a regular basis. But I rarely judge people by their cars until I see someone who isn’t an enthusiast make a really puzzling choice.

To be fair, I started owning Corvette’s when I was 25, so I had to give up on worrying about what people thought of me. I was buying too many tires to worry about getting those gold chains, ya know?
It’s pretty silly to judge people by cars these days, especially if you don’t really know said cars. With things like the FoST and the R-Spec being nearly identical (Seriously, I have a badge, and floor mats to differentiate me from a 3.8 Genesis. And one time my badge fell off.), along with the insane aftermarket speed mod community, one must just get over it.
That said, around people I know, and my family, I’ve been through something like 35 cars in my day. They’ve stopped commenting altogether at this point. Hell, I’ve worked here in Ohio for 2 years and I’ve sold 5 cars, bought 4. They don’t know what to think of me anymore.
That said, I don’t really judge people by their cars anymore, but it’s because I’ve been through so many and been through so much judging. I can, however, make a pretty educated comments on what will work for people when they ask.

I’m in a similar situation as a result of flipping so many cars. It was actually at the point my family was worried about me, thinking that constantly buying and selling cars was a result of some deep rooted problem I was having...I just like to do it. Cars are my passion. Experiencing all types is wonderful. Alas I have now settled in something I’m pretty sure they view as ridiculous (Fiat 500 Abarth) and no one asks me about it - so kind of a plus really

My wife and I both drive BMWs. Let the judgment rain in. But the truth is, I spend less on my ‘03 bimmer than a guy I work with who has a basic 2007 Ford Focus. My wife’s isn’t much newer; in fact, I think the most valuable vehicle in my family is the one that is universally loved by everyone who sees it, yet derives no judgment: my unrestored 1961 Ford pickup.
I work with a guy who has 9 cars currently; several old XJ Cherokees, a 2009 Corolla, a 2013 Tacoma, and some others. He looked at my car and said, geez how much is something like that? 5 grand I said.
WHAT? Really?
He went and bought something very similar about a week later (without selling any of the other cars, haha). Now I’m sure he gets a little judgment for driving “a fancy BMW” despite the fact that the Corolla is probably worth more, and the Tacoma is definitely worth WAY more.
